The Boy and I are in New Orleans for an OWBN LARP event (The Grand Masquerade) and while I don't really LARP, I wanted to go with since I had never been to New Orleans before. The main thing on our trip I wanted to do was to try some of the local foods.
When we got there Wednesday, we spent some time just wandering around the French Quarter, there are a lot of shops with antiques and the like. I didn't buy anything, but it was neat just walking around. Oh, also I got engaged, officially. :) We also went to Laffite's Blacksmith Bar which I thought was pretty cool It reminded me of Fitzpatrick's (a bar that used to be in Iowa City that I frequented). Small cozy, dark atmosphere with a nice outdoor patio. In New Orleans you can walk around with an open container, it reminded me of my trip to Greece.
Thursday for lunch I had a BBQ Roast Beef Po'Boy at Court Tavern on Bourbon Street. It was delicious. We also went out on Bourbon St for a little of the night life. It was crowded and not all it's cracked up to be. For a late night snack we went to Mr. Chubby's Cheesesteaks. The Boy had a cheeseburger and cheese fries. He said they were the best cheese fries/fries he's ever had. Our other friends both had cheesesteaks and said they were excellent.
Friday I wanted to try beignets. So, we went to Cafe Beignet. They were light, crisp and melt in your mouth delicious. It was like a cross between a funnel cake and a donut. Now, I don't like funnel cakes, but beignets are so good. The Boy got the southern breakfast which included grits. I had never had grits before, but they were pretty good. The reminded me a bit of malt o'meal but the texture has bigger lumps in it. I just had a bite of them plain, but would have loved to add cheese or maple syrup or even some brown sugar. Did a little shopping in the afternoon. We went to some Gothic clothing shops on Decatur Street. Then we, well I, went to The Quarter Stitch because I thought getting some yarn and making a shawl with it would be a good souvenir. I got two skeins of Colinette Jitterbug in the colorway Vincent's Apron. It's a golden yellow color. It's 100% merino wool and so soft. I am going to make the Holden Shawlette (link goes to Ravelry).
Also, I checked another "must try" food off my list. Jambalaya. We ate at Daisy Dukes. Not a fan of Jambalaya, but I did try something new. Here's a picture of it. It looks good, but it's not for me.
Went out on Friday tonight to Laffite's Blacksmith Bar again and then to the Cat's Meow for some karaoke.
Saturday we woke up late after being out the night before. In the afternoon we went on the hunt for some black pants. We went back to a thrift store on Decatur and the Boy found an awesome steampunk-y jacket and a black pirate-ish shirt...and I found an awesome green dress. We also went to the French Market which is set up like a flea market and found an engagement ring since I really wanted one. It's sterling silver circle of life band (it spins!) with what looks like blue sapphires.
Didn't get pictures taken like I wanted to, but there's really not that much to take pictures of. And we'll be back next year anyway. Saturday night we went to The Copper Monkey after game wrapped up. Just had some typical bar food. Nothing too exciting. Then it was back to the hotel to sleep and get up early Sunday morning since check out was at 11:00. We were on the road by 11:30. We stopped at a Popeye's Chicken place too. It was pretty good.
The drive home wasn't too bad. I stayed awake for most of it. I think I only slept for about 2 hours. We rolled in around 2am and promptly fell asleep.
Such a great trip (even though I don't LARP, yet). I can't wait to go back next year. I'm currently working on a character (and not putting too much thought into it so I don't over think it) that I'll get to play next year. I really don't want to go back to work and officially end the vacation, but I gotta.
